Burnup Chart

The multi-iteration burn up chart is widely recognized as one of the most valuable tools in the arsenal of agile teams. This chart offers a comprehensive view of the team's progress thus far and provides insights into their future delivery capability compared to the original plan.

Graphically represented with time on the horizontal axis and work on the vertical axis, the chart incorporates weighted velocity data to showcase completed work and presents a "cone of uncertainty" that outlines the expected achievements in the future.

Typically, the chart is first developed during a mid-range planning event and then continually examined during iterations. This iterative process allows teams to gather knowledge and evolve their plans to accommodate necessary changes.

In contrast, a burn down chart focuses solely on a single sprint or iteration, unlike the burn up chart, which spans multiple iterations.

Burnup chart is covered in the Adaptive Agility Fundamentals class as part of Agility Metrics.

While this is from a tool company, this Lucidchart article did a good job describing a burnup and a burndown chart, their differences, and their potential use cases.
